In June, something dawned on me while praying for my daughter the morning of her 10th birthday. My prayer started by asking God to bless her, to do a work in her and to keep her safe. I prayed for her to grow in the beauty of the Lord etc...you know, what all Christian moms pray for their children. As I prayed, I began to ask God to give me a special verse for her that would be from Him as her birthday present from God. How cool to have your very own 'birthday word from the Lord'. He quickly laid something on my heart. I scribbled the verse down on a 3x5 card and woke her up with it saying, "Happy Birthday, here is your present from God." She was really excited about it. I explained how I came by knowing that and now she keeps the card in her Bible. The verse revealed to me something she is supposed to be doing as a believer and now we have focused our attention on that verse in our conversations and will continue to do so throughout the year and over her life.
I am so excited about the idea to follow this for all of my kids, through all of their birthdays. I am going to have them memorize the verses that God gives me and my plan is to write a prayer/blessing surrounding this verse over each child for the year. We will keep each one in our Bible's to pray over our kids. One day, our kids will have a scrap book of all of their prayers/blessings that were spoken over them for an entire year.
Today was my son's birthday. I was excited to ask God what He had for him. The verse was not something I would have picked out, assuring me that this is not just a 'me' thing, but really of God. It actually was a stern warning. Wow, God loves us so very much, that even at the tender age of 8, the Lord desires for us to be Holy, set apart, saved to do the work of God and not the work of the flesh because He is jealous for our affection, even our son's and daughter's!
We will focus our prayer and discussion on this verse. Right before the verse, there was another one that spoke to me and my hubby. We saw our responsibility in bringing him up to be able to follow this command the Lord gave him. This has totally inspired me to an even deeper level of prayer for my kids.
If there is anything I can emphasize from this post, it is to urge you to talk to God about your kids with an abundant expectation of hearing from the Lord. It was never meant to be a one sided conversation. He speaks today, to us, about us, about our children. Getting away from the computer, the TV, the phone, our stresses and sitting before the Lord is the lifeline to bringing our kids into the Kingdom of Heaven with us.
If you haven't done this, sit with the Lord and ask Him. He really is waiting there, just waiting for us to ask for His guidance in our lives and our child's life. You know what? We need to do this for ourselves as well! Even for our friends. I am sure your friends and loved ones would be touched to know you took the time to ask God to give you something special for them on their special day. How much more should we take the time for our very own precious children?
I would love to hear from you. Is this something you would want to start doing or are you already doing it? If so, have you seen it making a difference in your child's heart? After all, that is what we are after...their heart. Don't be apathetic with their heart though, the enemy is after it as well and we must be diligent. Intentional parenting is not sitting around and hoping our kids turn out. It is putting a stake in the ground and saying..."As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

What do you Think of This Quote?
"Oh that God would give every mother a vision of the glory and splendor of the work that is given to her when a babe is placed in her bosom to be nursed and trained! Could she have but one glimpse in to the future of that life as it reaches on into eternity; could she look into it's soul to see its possibilities; could she be made to understand her own personal responsibility for the training of this child, for the development of its life, and for its destiny,--she would see that in all God's world there is no other work so noble and so worthy of her best powers, and she would commit to no others hands the sacred and holy trust given to her." -JR Miller
WOW, that quote is ...

Obedience for our Children
Sometimes I find myself wanting to knock my head against a brick wall. The reason? Disobedience in our kids. I am like all other moms, intentional parenting or not, my kids disobey. Most of the time, it is not done in a defiant way that is noticeable. I think we have tried very hard to put some fear of defiance in them, but it is still there at times and wrapped in a "I didn't hear you" attitude, or a stalling technique like going to sit on the throne in the bathroom to wait out the pressure. Sound familiar anyone?
Regardless of how disobedience plays out in my kids, the thing that drops me to my knees are the verses: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord. Honor your father and mother so that it may go well with you."
I desperately want it to go well with my kids, that they may have long life and that they will bring joy and not grief to us. I have to master teaching my kids to obey, even when I am tired of repeating myself. I have to choose to continue our discipline when what we are doing seems to not be working, but out of obedience because the Bible instructs us on how to discipline.
I began reading the ebook Warrior Prayers: Praying the Word for Boys in the Areas They Need it Most.
Praying and doing battle in prayer is what I feel called to do, but it always helps to have something written in front of me to help me when my creative juices have expired...which they do by about 10 am everyday ;)
I highly recommend buying this prayer book. I have chosen to use the scripture in my own prayer time like she suggests with putting the child's name in it. I have printed it off for quick reference to keep with my Bible to ensure I actually pray it.
Secondly, I have rewritten the verses in first person, so that it can be read as a prayer by each of my kids. Why should we parents be the only ones believing for this? Let them pray it over themselves as well! So, I have taped the scriptures on the head board of my boys' bed and on the walls above my daughters' beds. Each day, they will be reading this prayer. Eventually, I hope it will become a prayer of their hearts. The benefit? They will eventually have the Word memorized. They can hide this word in their heart that they might not sin against God. (Sigh) I can feel my burdens lifting. They are the Lords and if I commit my way (parenting) to the Lord, He promises to give me the desires of my heart, to not let my foot stumble, to direct my paths, to orchestrate my steps, and to lead me in paths of righteousness. God, please guide me there with my kids in tow.
Here is the prayer I put up for my kids, feel free to print it off for your children. The order of the verses came from the aforementioned Ebook. Please take the time to buy her book! It is awesome.
*note* I have NOT received any compensation for mentioning her ebook. This is my own free 2 cents :)

Patience and consistency, but with prayer...

Obedience
Dear Heavenly Father,
Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, may I obey the LORD our God...so that it will go well with me (Jeremiah 42:6).
May I obey my parents in the Lord, for this is right (Ephesians 6:1).
May I obey my leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over my soul, as those who will have to give an account. Let me do this with joy and not with groaning (Hebrews 13:17).
May I obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29).
May I return to the LORD my God, and obey with all my heart and all my soul all the commands God has given (Deuteronomy 30:2).
May I walk after the LORD my God and fear Him and keep His commandments and obey His voice. May I serve Him and hold fast to Him (Deuteronomy 13:4).
May I stop my sinning and begin to obey the LORD my God (Jeremiah 26:13).
May I obey Jesus' commandments, and remain in His love (John 15:10).
May I show my love for Christ by obeying His commands (John 14:15).
May my parents be full of joy at my obedience (Romans 16:19).
Please give me a new heart, and a new spirit. I know You will put it in me. Remove the heart of stone from my flesh and give me a heart of flesh. Put Your Spirit within me and cause me to walk in Your statutes and be careful to obey Your rules (Ezekiel 36:26-27).

I ask this in Jesus' name and by His power to change my heart. Let my words not return void but accomplish that which it has set out to do.

What I Would do Differently
My 12 year old daughter just returned from New York City on her first missions trip. I learned some things through it and I wanted to share with all those parents who might be contemplating sending their kids on a trip. If you are like me, this will be a HUGE decision.
I grew up in a third world country, so I know what dangers lurk out in this big ugly world...and I have seen TV, I know what dangers lie in New York City. (You can believe some things on TV, right?) I wrestled with this decision. We really wanted to send her on a missions trip as part of her rite of passage, but overseas was a bit too expensive for us since we are also going on a missions trip this year, so we decided to choose a stateside trip that would expose her to a need for Jesus without fully taking ME out of my comfort zone (a nice bonus :)) So, off she went on a 17 hours bus ride with our church to the very poor areas of NYC.
I fully expected her to return full of excitement for ministry and for her experiences and I fully expected me to jump up and down with her about her experiences. I was not, however, prepared to end up crying myself to sleep when she returned home.
My daughter arrived late Tuesday night and we met with big hugs and "Oh my goodness, I am so glad you survived!" tears. We were off to a late night milkshake to sit with the family and hear all about her trip. Soon, I realized that the discussion wasn't providing much information. Anything she told us was prefaced, as she pointed at my other kids, with "They really shouldn't hear this", and "I will tell you later", and "Oh, Mommy, you wouldn't believe..." She touched on the highlights and we went home.
After the kids were in bed, we sat up for several hours and she began to tell me what she witnessed. Can I just tell you, a pit hit my stomach. I couldn't hold back the tears as she expressed the world in its ugliest form. I cried, not because of what she saw, but because she saw. Keep in mind, we are very open and have had all the talks on mature issues, but it was so in her face. How she described it to me was like the world had vomited its nastiness right into her lap.
She described how the second or third day, her "eyes had seen too much". She felt depressed and sick to her stomach. One man she called the Mad Hatter was a highlight of her day. He was fully into the New Age and dressed very colorfully with makeup and a rainbow hat, but his antics made her smile. She said that even though he was crazy, he had hope. Though his hope was false, he was still happy in the midst of all the darkness that was in that area. I was thankful God put that color in her day. She needed it. She invited him to church on Sunday and was able to share some with him.
They handed out lots of food and water and as they did, they told people what Jesus did for them. One man even accepted her invitation to church on Sunday and actually showed up. When she went up to say hi, she saw he was signing up for a discipleship class. That was huge for her.
I can't even begin to list all she was exposed to. Pretty much if you can think it up, she either saw it or heard it being discussed.
She had one point where they were cleaning people's apartments. They were finished and were moving downstairs to another set when they were stopped and told if they went down those stairs, they might go missing. (Yep, that knocked the wind out of me for a minute). Apparently, people go down and never return! I am SO thankful that this lady spoke up. Even when our chaperons were about to go into a place where they were unaware of the danger, the Lord kept them safe. Once again, letting me know, I can trust God with my daughter.
As I went to bed that night, I cried asking God if I made a mistake. After all, I have shielded her from so much of this by guarding closely what she watches on TV and movies and even homeschooling her. Had I just thrown her to the wolves at still such an innocent age? He quickly brought something to my mind and spoke it to my heart and it instantly gave me peace. The Lord showed me that yes, she was exposed to so much, but due to the fact that she has been protected from those influences, she was thankfully, not numb to them. Her spirit reacted to what she was seeing, thus feeling the heaviness she described to me. Had she just known someone in her neighborhood doing drugs or known some girl having an intimate relationship with a guy, she likely would not see the consequences of their mistakes, at least not right away . In fact, many times, that lifestyle is deceiving and can even look glamorous. She will never see what goes on behind their closed doors with their parents and the internal damage those decisions cause. But by seeing the inner city of New York, she was able to see humanity in its depravity. She saw the full cycle of sin that literally leads to hopelessness, chains of bondage, and death. It repulsed her, but the people tugged at her heart. She was able to see the hopeless of this world and know that she knew the answer for them. It allowed for her to see a glimpse of her purpose in this life.
This had been my prayer for her. All week, the thing I continually prayed for, besides safety, was just that. God, show her the hopelessness of the world and let her know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus is the only way out of that. I guess I hadn't thought through what that would look like, but He did answer it and it was a good thing...not a bad thing. In fact, it left a bad taste in her mouth for poor choices. It made her life a whole lot more appealing. She said she had no idea just how blessed we really were until she saw this. She saw her faith debated, which was a great experience for her. She was mocked and laughed at. She was rejected and scorned...gee, who does that sound like? She was "a partaker of Christ" in those moments. She was rejected by the world and felt the sting of being the minority. However, she ALSO saw people stunned that they would pay money and drive all that way to NY to clean a dirty apartment all in the name of serving someone. She saw people who were grateful for their prayers and food. She saw people come to God's grace. She saw that she was a light in this dark world.
I have found a few things I would do differently now with my other kids before they go.
Number one, I wish I hadn't been so naive. I could have prepared her mentally a little more for what she would encounter.
I also would have taught her how to pray through the depression. That was the first time she really was able to feel what was going on in the Spirit realm. She went from living in an area where God is the authority to serving in an area where the Enemy is. That is spiritual warfare and she wasn't fully prepared for how to do battle in prayer.
Thirdly, I would pray differently for her while she is gone. I know now what needs to be covered in prayer, but thankfully, I prayed what I knew and God took care of the rest. He is her Father and walked with her. That was more than I could do. I am so thankful we serve a God that is relational. He is real and His love is life altering. I am glad my daughter got to be the hands and feet of God...going into the world to spread the life changing news of Jesus, the lover of their soul. She would do it all again and so would I.
If you are contemplating sending your child on a missions trip, here are some things I would suggest:
1. Get together with one or more of the moms and spend time in prayer for the kids while they are on their trip. Let God speak to you about what areas they need a prayer covering in.
2. Pray over their safety on their actual to and from trip as well as there time there. They will most likely be in a much more dangerous traffic environment than where you live and if there is a lot of walking, those dangers are evident and should be prayed for as well. I prayed for her mental, physical, emotional and spiritual safety. I prayed against adverse influences as well. All that exposure needs to be met with a "no thanks" attitude by our kids.
3. Ephesians 6 says we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and spiritual forces in the heavenly realms, so don't be ignorant about such things. The enemy is at work in this world and your kids are likely going to a place that is without the knowledge of Jesus, so pray for a "garment of praise" for the "spirit of heaviness". Pray that they will be aware of the devil's schemes and stand firm against them. Pray the entire "armor of God" over them each day.
4. Pray that their "light will shine before ALL men so that people will see their good works and praise our Father in heaven". Pray for their words to "not return void, but to accomplish that which it was set out to do." We don't want the trip to be in vain. We want them to bear fruit in what they have set out to do. I prayed my daughter would see success in what they were doing and she did see one person give their life over to God.
5. Talk extensively with the leaders of their trip. Make sure they are aware of the physical signs that come from spiritual oppression such as sickness, headaches, depression, anger, irritability etc...If the leaders don't recognize it and take a stand against it in prayer, the kids might suffer. Her team certainly experienced a lot of this. ( I wish I would have thought to do this sooner.) Make sure you teach your kids how to recognize this and how to pray through.
6. Make sure you know the safety procedures that your group employs. Our church had a great system, but unfortunately, it wasn't enforced and that is something to learn from. Make certain the leaders of your trip not only believe in the safety precautions, but have the leadership experience to enforce them. When there is a set of rules with a set of enforceable consequences in place, it will be better for everyone.
7. Write letters to your kids that you can send with them from everyone in the family. My daughter had one to open each day from someone in our home and that helps them to feel connected to us even 17 hours away. I filled my letters with mommy advice that I would want to remind her of if I would have had contact with her. She couldn't take a cell phone, so it was just our words on paper that could help encourage her. Anticipate struggles in your letters so you can address them and give them some motherly and fatherly answers when they can't ask.
8. When they say, "Don't send a cell phone with your kids..." I would say, definitely send one with them. I do not condone breaking rules, but for goodness sake, she is 12 , in NYC, and could get lost. You need a plan B in case Plan A fails..which it did while she was gone and one kid got lost, so I say, send a phone and keep it off and let them know they are NOT EVER to take it out and use it with the exception of an emergency.
9. Have the kids keep a notebook in their day pack that has all the leaders phone numbers in case of getting lost. Our church provided that for the kids, but without a phone...(see suggestion 8 :))
10. Teach your kids (especially boys) to "look away". In other countries and States, their eyes can be bombarded with vulgar images and words that they are not accustomed to seeing. My husband says boys have to learn the art of eye bouncing. As soon as you see something you shouldn't see, your eyes should bounce away to something else instantly. Parents...we have to be intentional to teach our boys this anywhere we live. They don't usually do this naturally.
11. Ask God to give you Bible verses to pray over your kids. The word of God is living and breathing and powerful!! Use it. It is our weapon against spiritual darkness and your kids will encounter that on a missions trip whether they are aware of it or not. As their parental authority, it is our duty to bathe and cover them in prayer and hold fast to the promises God has for them in the Bible.
12. Pray that this missions experience ignite a passion for ministry and missions and a call to see the lost of this world saved.
13. When your children return, remind them to pray for the people they encountered. God planted a seed in their hearts and now we need to pray it into growth and harvest. Learn the people's names that your kids talked about and pray for them. Allow them to see you praying for them so they can know that it is really important.
14. Send a journal with your kids and ask them to journal each day about what they did and how they felt.
15. To help with building the unity between siblings, give them spending money and have them buy souvenirs for their brothers and sisters.
16. When your kids return, pray over them for freedom from anything they came into contact with on their trip that is not welcome and especially do this if you notice a major change in behavior when they return.
(That's just my two cents! Let me know what things you have encountered if you have sent yours on a trip or what you might want to add to this list.)

Tell Your Time
I just finished a book..all in ONE day! Well, it was an easy read and only 30 pages long, so I have nothing to brag about, but SERIOUSLY!! It was a GREAT book.
One thing I continually bring to God is how I need help with time management. With a husband, 4 kids, homeschooling, trying to keep the house semi decent, couponing with ferocity to save and stockpile, keeping my blog current (thank you very much for being here by the way!), doing some home remodeling, fundraising for my missions trip and then trying to keep up with 600 plus friends on facebook...you get the picture :) NOT. ENOUGH. TIME. IN. THE. DAY!!
Okay, I do know her, but that is not why I am telling you about this book. It's just really practical and it's RIGHT on time for me :) No pun intended...well maybe. If you think it was funny, it was and if not...it was an oversight.
Either way, this book is chalk full of what will happen if you don't get your time under control, how to get it under control in really simple ways and then of course, the materials to make it happen. LOVE IT!
The book is only $4.99! You can have it at your fingertips instantly via computer. THEN, if you go through my link, she will pay me half the book price for referring it. :) ALL of that money will go to pay for my missions trip to Nepal where we will be climbing the Himalayan Mountains to an unreached people group and sharing the gospel with them while providing medical services. Is that not great for both of us??
SO...what are you waiting for? TIME is of the essence...I want to go to Nepal because people need to hear what we have to say and YOU need to get your time under control...well, if you are like me you do ;)
THANKS for going through my link!! If you love the book, you can be an affiliate too and use the money to go to Switzerland if you want or you could use it on a trip to Siberia, but I don't suggest that. Now that is funny if you read the book.
You can click below to visit her site and purchase her book!
Click here to visit Amy Lynn Andrews.
(UPDATE- The updated version is now available. I have not read the new and improved, but the older version was great! So, I can confidently recommend her new version. Also, my trip to Nepal is completed. Thank you to those who bought and contributed :) The link is still an affiliate link.)

Saving Your Heart for Your Husband
I would like to introduce you to a homeschooled teen girl that is light years ahead of me when I was her age. Her name is Morgan. Let me tell you, she is a beautiful girl that is right smack dab in the middle of teen life and actually has her head on straight with her thoughts, her heart and her emotions in tact. She is bold and courageous to stand up and live the life that she does. If you have a teen or a preteen, I HIGHLY recommend hooking your kids up to her blog.
Here is an excerpt from her first post in the blog "While I'm Waiting":
"Because of my opinion, I have decided NOT to date or be in a relationship with anyone for my remaining time in high school. In order to avoid the feeling of emptiness, I HAVE to fill myself with something. Most girls fill their emptiness with drugs or alcohol, but what good is that? It is once again momentary pleasure and it will not last. I have fallen in love with Jesus Christ and because of that He will fill my heart with love, not just a temporary love but a love that last.
While I'm waiting... I will be studying woman in the Bible who waited on God for their husbands and were blessed beyond compare because of it. This blog will be a deep study of these woman, notes on what I learn and challenges I face along my journey."
Please stop by her blog and follow her. If anything, you can pass on to your kids what you read there. It is so important these days to have a role model that is actually worth modeling. I know I am thankful my daughter has Morgan to look up to. I hope that you will find that same peace knowing she is speaking in to your kids lives.

Savor the Moment
FAMILY! My heart truly beats for a close knit, interdependent, serving family that is a light in this dark world. Nothing could give me warm fuzzies like the ones I get when it feels like everything is going just right in that department. I have been lately having lots of "close" moments with my kids where it feels like we are both savoring the moment a little longer than usual.
We have had some deep sadness in our "homeschooling family". Through the tragic loss of a precious two year old, my family has had an awakening. Watching our friends go through such a deep heart ache has been an eye opener for us. It's sad that it takes knowing something so awful to jar you back into the harsh realities of life...how precious it is, how fleeting it is. The baby's daddy encouraged us at her funeral to hug our little ones and focus on them rather than the to do list, which by the way, hangs over my head everyday, sometimes yelling louder than my kids. So many times I give into those things instead of just sitting, listening and laughing at the silliness of my beautiful bush babies. Instead I run around like a chicken with my head cut off, shushing my kids and pushing them aside to get the kitchen cleaned for the fourth time that day. How much time have I wasted? I don't even want to know. I have to remind myself that I live in God's grace and He can make up for lost time when I get distracted from the single most important part of my life outside of Him...my family, assuming I am trying to get back on track. And that my friends is exactly what I am trying to do right now. However, it can be dangerous to think we have more time. The father said this at his daughter's funeral, "At 4:00 I thought I had all the time in the world. At 5:00, there was no more time." This statement hit me like a brick wall. Mommy's and Daddy's, if you can take one thing home from this blog today, it is this: Treasure your time, savor your moments, love on your family and have a plan for them. It is worth it to be purposeful today.

Intentional
I am excited to introduce you to my new friends. They live in Sudan and she wrote a wonderful blog article on being intentional with your children. This goes along so well with the purpose of my website. I hope you will be blessed as much as I was from reading this.

By definition, this word can mean the following: characterized by conscious design or purpose; done or performed with purpose and intent; the end or goal that is aimed at, or intended to accomplish; done deliberately; done with intent; “I did this by choice”.
This is how we ought to live. Amen. I could close with that! I have been very excited about this summer with my children. As each summer has approached in recent years I have this sense of the limited time I have with them as they grow older. Here in Sudan, the majority of people we work with, as well as Sudanese that can afford to, leave for at least a portion of the summer (the other night it was still 97 degrees at midnight!). The fact that most of my kids friends leave is something that I see as a unique gift, forcing and forging their relationships with each other. So, here we are—school let out yesterday and the word on my heart is “intentional”.
There are practical skills I want my kids to learn, experiences I want them to have and share with them…but far more I want them to learn something that it seems I am just figuring out myself, and that is how to simply “be”. When the kids came home from their last day of school, they opened a present. I am sure that they were disappointed! At least it wasn’t what they had in mind. Inside was a huge white piece of fabric that is now hung on our wall for the summer. Across the top was written this question: “Who Are We?” On that sheet they are going to draw all the fun things we do this summer and all the while together we will be ‘becoming’. I am not sure how to explain just what God is doing in my heart. I do know that this is the question that not only we need to ask, but it would help all of us. Who are we? Are we who we want to be? What are we doing/or not doing that is shaping us? What defines us? What do we want to define us? More importantly, Who defines us. I have personally tolerated too many things in my personal life and in our family simply for lack of being very intentional about doing the things that will bring about changes I desire.
We all know that we have to be intentional about things that we really want to see happen. I think it is easy to do this in tangible ways like saving money toward a certain goal—more difficult to do when we are trying to be intentional about becoming a certain type of person for example. How do we measure it? Sometimes, the growth is so subtle and we are even unaware it is happening…so when growth is difficult to measure, much less be found, we mustn’t get discouraged. On the other hand, a tree is known by its fruit. If there isn’t anything that points toward what you want to be growing, maybe some branches need to be chopped off altogether to make room for the new thing to grow!
One of my most favorite quotes is: “your home is the most powerful arena to change a life for God”. I will continue to reach out to my neighbors. Steve is working diligently to do some restructuring of the English centers to make sure that we are focused on proclamation of the Gospel. I know that you would all agree that we could reach all the Muslims of Sudan for Christ and if we lost our family in the process, we would have missed it. I think we typically operate in a good balance with this—but I wanted to share with you what God has on my heart. We cannot apologize, especially for those of you who are moms, for making our families our priority!
Here I am at the start of summer with a lot of good intentions. Will I fail? In some ways, I know I most certainly will. But I think that even in the effort, we will be “becoming” and if we are intentional with the end in sight, Jesus will define us. He will continue to teach me how being is of greater value than doing. He will continue to teach us how to really love each other. As His heart grows in us, he will show us how to respond to the poverty and suffering all around us in His way. I am counting on it. My heart is full of good intentions but as I said, I am learning to “be”. I know that apart from Him I can do nothing. I know that through Christ in us, He will accomplish His purposes for our family and for yours as well. Oh what might He do if we yield ourselves to the process of His definitions…

Play the Caste System
I know this is a highly unconventional family fun night game, but it really has value. We are currently studying India by using Sonlight's online FREE Passport to India video series that takes you on a 10 day journey through India to learn about their culture. You get a sneak peak into Hinduism, their architecture, their dress, their daily lives, the Caste System and more. Your children will know so much about this country and all while sitting in the comfort of their home.
We decided to participate in a suggested game where your family members each draw a card. Each card indicates the system that they were born into and they get to "live it out" for one day.
Make 5 cards. If you have more in your family, you can make duplicates. If you have less, be sure to have the highest and lowest caste system represented.
---The smallest and most powerful group are the Brahmins. This caste is made up of Hindu priests and
religious leaders.
--- Kshatriya caste are warriors and rulers.
---The Vaisya caste include merchants, farmers and artisans.
---The lowest caste are the Sudras, and do hard work and manual labor.
---Untouchables are not even in the caste system because they are considered beneath humans. This is where the term "Outcast" comes from. They do sanitation work with their hands, carry brooms behind their backs to sweep up their "unclean" footprints and are living in the most impoverished areas of India. They are also considered spiritually unclean. Today, the untouchables are referred to as Dalits which means "crushed, broken". Though it's against the law to treat people in such a way, it is still practiced somewhat.
Here's the main idea: Draw a card and pretend to be in that caste. If it is too difficult for one person to be the Untouchable the whole day, set a time limit and then redraw your cards. This way everyone knows what it is like.
We are playing this today. My kids are having a great time. When we originally drew the cards, my son "Dahalo" received the Untouchable card. He panicked and my daughter "Embu" volunteered to leave her Brahmin (highest) status and take his. (Though this would never happen in India, it was a terrific example of what Jesus did for us when He forsook His high place as King to become low and make a way for us who are all unworthy of God's presence, to be considered worthy now by Christ's sacrifice.) I love how God set us up for that lesson to made so clear.
"Ameru" is the Vaisya caste and I am the Kshatriya caste. "Luo" is just sort of floating between them since he is three. He likes bossing his sister around. Embu has cleaned the toilets, made everyone snacks, cleaned Dahalo's room and done Ameru's chores. I have cleaned the kitchen as Dahalo commanded and emptied trash baskets. My husband received the Sudras caste and he is doing that anyway at work. HA!
We are having fun, but the real value is learning to empathize and to see the need to pray for the people of India. My heart is so stirred for them. We as Christians have such a message of hope for them. They are loved by the one true God. They are valued enough, so much that Jesus paid their price for their sins. He sees no difference in their caste. What amazing news that would be for the Dalits. They are indeed touchable, lovable and worthwhile!
Here is a picture of Embu playing the Dalit. Notice the broom behind her back, sweeping her footsteps up.
